Short note describing
what the USSV CF Scholarship has meant to me
There is duality to my cultural background, having a white father and an American Indian mother. Consequently, my fluency covers several languages. This and father’s deep roots in the service drew me to a civic career, diplomacy. But my father’s situation has also made me a realist, so my minor is economics. Expectations he instilled in me are attributes that have the potential to make a difference in this world, living my father’s motto, ego serviam. These, along with well-rounded scholarship and the building of character, yield the formidable tools a leader requires. The acquisition of a multi-disciplinary analytical mentality is important for it enables a leader to communicate with team members of divergent disciplines. But most importantly, the long path to building character produces a person who is loyal thru thick and thin. I believe in the reality of money and ethics as catalysts for progress; the lack thereof of either may also impede it. Thru this lens can be seen why the USSV CF Scholarship has meant so much to me. Verily, character born of hard work, eschewing any sense of entitlement, enduring trials and overcoming, this is the stuff that fathers progress.
Rapid globalization is diminishing the pertinence of political barriers, but also, of cultural barriers. Five years after graduating my hope is to have earned a State Department leadership position. And in ten years, it is to bring Americans and Central Americans into this rapidly approaching universal respect, open-mindedness, transparency, and intercultural communication. Change needs to happen, and I need to be the catalyst for it.
