Dear Mr. President,
Sir it is with the greatest of pleasure that I enclose our presentation coins which commemorate the birthdays of our Navy and its Submarine Service.
As an avid student of history I am sure you are familiar with the illustrious deeds of our Navy’s famous heroes. For the last 250 years, in October, active duty and veteran Sailors have gathered to celebrate our Navy’s birthday with formal balls. The date and place of these vary but celebrants gather to remember those illustrious deeds, the people who did them, and their own shipmates. The front face of our coin represents the sweat, the blood, the glories, and the sacrifices of those Sailors.
Slightly less well known is our Submarine Service birthday. Every April for the last 125 years submarine Sailors have gathered to celebrate their birthday. Again the dates and places vary but the motivation of the celebrants is the same: remembrance of those who have gone before us, gratitude for the shoulders we stood on during our service, and our shipmates. The back face represents the skill, bravery, and devotion of those who served as well as the bright future of our Submarine Force.
On behalf of the US Submarine Veterans Charitable Foundation and the 12,000 members it serves we would be proud if you’d include one of our coins in your collection. The other is for the pocket of your golf slacks (it will make an excellent ball marker on the greens) and it will always be a reminder of the value of our submarines and their crews to our National Defense. We hope you will join us in wishing those who still serve in the Navy the best of luck and our submariners good hunting. Remember our submariners have been holding their balls for 125 years.
Sincerely,
George W. Palmer
