USSVI GROTON BASE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

SUBVETS Groton Base has been a supporter of the U.S. SUBVETS Scholarship program doing annual fund raising for several years.

From 1999 to 2004 the members of Groton Base raised increasing amounts of money for the USSVI Scholarship Fund that was presented annually to USSVI at the Annual Convention.

Starting at $1,000.00 in 1999 and growing a little more each year and ending with a $10,000.00 donation that was presented to the USSVCF Scholarship program in 2004.

In 2004 the membership at SUBVETS Groton Base decided to not only support the USSVCF Scholarship program, but to also establish their own Scholarship Program for the Children, Grand Children, and Step Children of their own members.

The Groton Base Executive Board established a Scholarship Committee. The Executive Board chose Jack Casey an Associate Member to lead the Scholarship Committee because of his past support and work and success in raising funds for the Scholarship Program. Lead by Jack, the Committee worked very hard in developing a viable Scholarship Program and raising funds for the Scholarships as well.

In late Spring of 2005 the program was ready to go. Scholarship Applications were accepted, candidates were screened and at the July 2005 Membership Meeting it was announced that the Scholarship Committee had selected the first Candidate to receive a USSVI Groton Base Scholarship.

The recipient of the first Groton Base Scholarship was Jessica Hunter, daughter of Galen Hunter.

On 1 August 2005, Jessica was awarded a $6,000.00 Scholarship in the presence of the Groton Base Membership.

In 2005, Groton Base requested to be considered as a part of the USSVCF so that Donations made to the Groton Base Scholarship Fund could be considered as Charitable Donations.

On February 13, 2006, the USSVCF Board of Directors of the United States Submarine Veterans' Charitable Foundation approved a motion to allow Regions, Districts and larger bases within USSVI to establish a Scholarship program for the children, and grandchildren of active duty submarine sailors and submarine veterans within those regions, districts and larger bases. Effective immediately, Groton Base is authorized to begin it's own Scholarship Fund and the Foundation Treasurer is instructed to establish the Groton Base Scholarship account into which all Groton funds are credited. Also effective immediately, the Groton Base Scholarship Fund is authorized to begin fund raising and providing scholarship monies to qualified applicants in accordance with the USSVCF Scholarship Program and the provisions of the IRC section 501(c)(3) regulations.

There are distinct differences between the Groton Base Scholarship Program, and the USSVCF Scholarship Program. But the goals remains the same. To provide Scholarship's to deserving College Students who are deserving descendents of members of this organization.

Using the benefits of the 501(c)(3) status of the USSVCF will help in raising funds for the Groton Base Scholarship Fund, as well as supporting the National USSVCF Scholarship Fund.
